One contemporary vouchsafing for this decent Irish republican and upright Christian-he realised that the police and British Army and Provos should be left to fight it out-would be, as regards the Provos,

The short-term consequences back then for Sinn Fein because of their rebelliousness? 

Rough and ignorant police behaviour, medical misconduct, legal negligence and very serious crimes committed by the British Army. Those crimes go uninvestigated and unpunished. Ridiculous buffoons in the British Foreign Office do not know that every penny of expenditure on burgeoning medical salaries and expenses is approved by a "ways and means committee" in the Home Office. If  police stooges don't behave as regulated their expenses cheques will be withheld. There is no such thing as something for nothing as many political nobodies and legal and judicial hasbeens soon find out. They are expected to be forever "at someone's beck-and-call".

The problem lies with the police and the political administration. Note the incompetence of bodies which purport to curtail the RUC/PSNI disposition towards unlawful arrest and that force's political leanings towards right-wing extremism.

 Perverting the course of justice is one of the oldest statutory offences.Misconduct in public office and corporate manslaughter have been added to the list of statutory offences more recently. Those are statutory offences which should have been legislated for centuries ago.

It is the Orangeman's and average member of the Royal Black Preceptory's lot to be forever an outsider looking in (and the IRA is no different).
