Water and Fire: The word and the spirit

John baptised with water but at Pentecost the inspirational Spirit descended on the Apostles to give the seven gifts of life, prophecy, leadership, skill, holiness, wisdom and guidance.

The water that John baptised with is the word of scripture. Fire and blood are baptism by Jesus i.e. the Holy Spirit. The Spirit gives grace to those whom God has chosen for his own in this world.

This spirit and water wash away sin and vice and corruption. The baptism of the Spirit is, as John says (John 1) unique to Jesus. The Spirit gives gifts of inspiration and languages.

Modern English cognitive neuroscientists tell us that those who are bilingual before they are twenty are low in social skills so one must assume that there is no manipulation in linguists. Most of the world know more than one language so modern science seems to have a very narrow outlook in Anglo-Saxon countries which preach about linguists’ poor social skills.

John continued (John, 3) “He must grow greater, I must grow smaller”.
